Phonetic Circles Online

This program is offered to students who would like to be able to practice pronouncing French vowels, consonants, word stress, and intonation. It includes a weekly hour of guided exercises with an instructor for 5 weeks. 

Beginner*, Intermediate, and Advanced levels are offered. Two timeslots are available for students to choose from: 12-1pm and 6:30-7:30pm. All times are in Atlantic time.

*Please note that Beginner phonetic circles are not offered to complete beginners – students need to have completed level Beginner 101 to be able to attend.

Use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom

Please note that the use of AI tools to record the class is not permitted. Only the teacher is permitted to record the class, using the recording feature of the Teams video call. The teacher is only permitted to do this if all students agree to have the class recorded.

Refund and Cancellation policy

You can cancel your registration, with a $10 administration fee, until 9 a.m. on the second Monday of the session. After that date, we will not accept cancellations.

    There is a $10 administrative fee for cancellations between August 18 and October 12, 2026. After October 12, there will be no refund.

Registration

Students who are registering for the first time must complete an assessment of their French skills before registering for the session. The assessment is divided into a written component that students can complete online here and, after that, students can book an appointment for a quick oral assessment. The link for booking an oral assessment time will be available once you have submitted your written test. The oral assessment is done over the phone.

If you are in the Beginner 102 to Beginner 104 level, you could take the Beginner Phonetic Circle.

If you are in the Intermediate 101 to Intermediate 104 level, you could take the Intermediate Phonetic Circle.

If you are in the Advanced 101 to Advanced 104 level, you could take the Advanced Phonetic Circle.

If this is your first time registering OR you did not attend the Fall 2024 or Winter 2025 sessions, you will need to complete our French assessment. This assessment includes a written section that you can complete online and an oral section that you can complete over the phone. You must book a day and time for your oral assessment.

* Cancellation:

If you cancel your registration with a 24-hour notice before the first class, we will refund the course cost. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the first class will not be refunded.
